Overview

The Survey Technician / Land Surveyor Intern coordinates field survey crews and handles complex surveying tasks in both field and office settings. This role involves managing daily operations, ensuring quality standards, and utilizing technical and supervisory skills.

The position also requires fostering a positive team atmosphere, supporting staff development, and ensuring clear communication with the Project Surveyor regarding project status and issues. The Survey Technician / Land Surveyor Intern oversees the field personnel and ensures successful project execution throughout its lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Survey Technician on survey teams conducting plane and geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, boundary, and control projects.
  • Research and prepare survey control data for field crews, with Project Manager approval.
  • Participate in pre-survey planning with project managers and surveyors.
  • Train and mentor field crews on surveying methods, equipment use, and safety protocols.
  • Track project milestones, report progress, and communicate status updates to the Project Manager.
  • Perform surveying calculations using tools like AutoCAD and COGO software.
  • Prepare and maintain survey reports, including grade sheets, corner records, and other documentation.
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data and assist in property boundary determination based on legal documents.
  • Conduct ground surveys to establish baselines, elevations, and other measurements.
  • Research legal and survey records for boundary information.
  • Support the development of survey methods and procedures and perform QA/QC throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment, conduct weekly meetings, and provide training on topics like data collection, surface modeling, and field note procedures.
  • Oversee equipment and vehicle maintenance, including calibrations, repairs, and logs.
  • Coordinate pre-field work tasks, such as utility requests, corner records, and project scoping.
  • Manage field schedule changes and coordinate field crew resources.
  • Resolve issues with field equipment and data collection and maintain expertise in data collection software.
  • Implement and monitor safety procedures to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Assist in downloading field data into AutoCAD Civil3D and OpenRoads for surface modeling.
  • Provide field and CAD support to meet project deadlines and deliverables.

Working Conditions

  • General: Office (60%) and Field (40%) Environments
  • Using a computer at a desk for up to 8+ hours daily when in the office and up to 10+ hours when in the field.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and use office and field equipment and supplies, some weighing up to 50+ pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors including extreme temperatures and weather.
  • Ability to work in urban and rural sites and roadways containing flat or uneven terrain.
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, and reach while surveying and operating surveying equipment.
  • Ability to cut and clear brush or trees as needed to complete field survey duties.
  • Potential exposure to harmful plants, insects, wildlife, and busy traffic.
  • Willing to travel/stay overnight for project locations over 2 hours from home office (or at PM discretion)
  • Ability to work overtime in the office or field as needed for project deadlines.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.

Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years survey experience including design surveys, topographic surveys, boundary retracement surveys, and constructions staking.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and make project related supervisory decisions for field and office staff.
  • Familiarity of State Plane Coordinate Systems.
  • Proficient in using all survey equipment and data collection software.
  • Ability to interpret survey maps, documents, deeds, legal descriptions, construction, and utility plans, etc.
  • Familiarity and ability to work with AutoCAD Civil3D and MicroStation OpenRoads software.
  • Land survey education preferred but not required.
  • Registered Land Surveyor Intern is preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to new processes, procedures, and technology.
